Analysis, part 10 - Jacket Length

The DS9/NEM admiral jacket body itself seemed to vary considerably in length, probably depending on the actors' various physiques - most notably, height, weight/torso build, and arm length.

Some jackets, for instance, appeared to be sleeve-length:

Admiral Paris' jacket was on the short side as well, appearing to extend slightly below the bottom of his sleeves, and perhaps 8" below his waistline:

VOY, 6x10 "Pathfinder"
VOY, 7x25 "Endgame"

VOY, 7x20 "The Changing Face of Evil"
Admiral Ross had at least two jackets (more on this later); one appeared to extend approximately 2" below his sleeve and 10" below his waistline:

VOY, 7x1 "Image in the Sand"
The other was a bit longer, with the bottom perhaps 12" below his waistline (though it's hard to say for certain, obviously):

Insurrection
Admiral Dougherty's jacket length appeared to be somewhere in the middle of the other two, but closer to Admiral Ross' shorter jacket:

DS9, 6x5 "Favor the Bold"
Admiral Coburn's jacket appeared to be longer than the others, like Admiral Ross' longer jacket:

"Admiral" Patrick's cosplay was quite a bit longer than any of theirs.

DS9, 7x5 "Chrysalis"
Oddly, Patrick had an, erm, full figure, like Admiral Paris, but while Paris' jacket was rather short, Patrick's was perhaps the longest ever seen ...

This was probably because, in addition to being "pleasantly plump," the actor playing Patrick appeared to have shorter-than-average arms, and the combination of these two physical traits caused his jacket to appear to have a much longer "skirt" than it actually did (though it was still quite long by comparison).

He doesn't know why his jacket's that long, either.

Here, you can see some of the admiral jackets, in approximate order from shortest to longest:

NOTE: On our DS9/NEM admiral jacket pattern, the bottom of the jacket is 12" below the waistline - definitely on the long side of what was seen on screen. The best way to determine ideal jacket length is to make a test jacket and adjust accordingly. Shortening the jacket is quite easy! See our "tips for altering the jacket for a perfect fit" at the end of this tutorial.

Whew! That can be a lot to keep up with, and some of you may be feeling like this:

But don't worry; we accounted for all of these characteristics in our pattern, and the following instructions should be thorough enough for you to construct a fantastic replica of your own!
